In May 2023, the Australian Government announced that it would be undertaking a 90-day review into hundreds of major national infrastructure projects that constitute Australia’s $120 billion nation building pipeline.

The Calder Freeway upgrade was included in this review. Given the importance of this project to Melbourne’s west, Council proceeded to advocate to ensure it remained a government priority raising the issue with many MPs and Ministers throughout the year.

Unfortunately, the Calder Project was not identified as a priority in the review. Fixing the Calder remains a priority in our new Advocacy Plan 2023-25 and advocacy will continue to secure funding from both levels of government. Brimbank is now partnering with eight other Councils through which the Calder Freeway passes to coordinate broader advocacy for the Calder Freeway in 2024.
