Composting is something we all can do to minimise waste going to landfill and help make a big difference for the environment.

Food in landfill breaks down anaerobically (without air) and produces methane, a greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change. Composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions and returns vital nutrients to the soil, and we can all make a difference.

Every household that composts diverts an average 3kg of food waste per week from landfill, or approximately 156kg per household per year.

Composting at home is a great way to:

  • cut your waste in half
  • reduce your carbon footprint
  • make rich soil and fertiliser to grow healthy gardens.

Minimise your waste

The best way to manage food waste is to minimise the amount that becomes waste in the first place. You can do this by only buying what you need and using everything you’ve got.
